Rhubarb

The rhubarb was forcing the slate off the top of the old chimney pot…

We’ve had a few rhubarb crowns in this garden for several years and they’ve always managed a modest crop each year (and that’s putting it favourably).

I think one of the crowns is getting properly established, so this earlier this Spring I put an old chimney pot over the crown when it first started showing signs of growth.

Some six weeks later, the bit of old slate on top was being lifted by the growth of rhubarb underneath the pot. Time to release the rhubarb!

Pulling the chimney pot off, the pale rose coloured stems flopped around, exposed to the light of day for the first time this year. So we ate them. Stewed with a little sugar and some homemade vanilla and rosewater ice cream. Yummy.
